Offers, enrolment and deferment of enrolment
Offers
You will be notified by the Universities Admissions Centre if the University has made you an offer of admission. The UAC Guide and UAC Mid-Year Supplement contain detailed information about the offer process, including when offers are made.
March Semester intake
For the March Semester intake, which is the main intake each year, there are a number of offer rounds. The University makes most of its offers to domestic students in the Main Round, which occurs in mid-January. Usually, a smaller number of offers are made in the Late and Final rounds, which occur late in January and in February.
Applicants who receive an offer in these rounds must attend an enrolment session which is usually within a few days of the offer date. Classes in March Semester usually start at the beginning of March.
July Semester intake
You will be notified by the Universities Admissions Centre if the University has made you an offer of admission.
For the July Semester intake there is usually only one offer round, which occurs at the end of June. Successful applicants enrol by attending an enrolment session in person, normally in mid-July. Teaching in July Semester usually commences at the end of July.
Conditions
Make sure you provide correct and complete information throughout the application process. Your offer can be revoked by the University if the information you have provided is not accurate and complete. Offers of admission are made for a particular intake, and cannot be taken up after that intake. The sole exception is for applicants who apply for, and are granted, a deferment of enrolment (see below).
Enrolment
Successful applicants will receive instructions about the enrolment process with their offer letters from UAC. All students will be required to enrol in person, shortly after the offer is made.
The period between being made an offer and your enrolment session can be as short as one or two days, and it is very important that you are available to attend this session. You will be designated a particular enrolment period by the University, and if you do not attend that enrolment session your offer of admission may lapse.
Enrolment does not need to be completed by the enrolling student. Students who are unable to attend their session can send a proxy instead.
Your questions about the enrolment process, including those about making alternative enrolment arrangements, should be directed to the faculty which offers the course for which you have been made an offer.
Deferment of enrolment
Applicants who are made an offer of admission through UAC at the beginning of the year can apply to defer their enrolment for a period of one year. Deferment is not available to applicants who are admitted in July Semester.
If your application is approved, this would mean that you could start your studies one year after the deferment was granted instead of starting straight away. Students who have been granted a deferment are assured of a place the following year, even if entry standards rise, so long as the deferred course continues to be open for applications through UAC.
Information about how to apply for deferment will be issued with your offer letter from UAC. The University has introduced an online deferment application facility, but it is also possible to apply on paper by mail or in person.
While anyone can apply for a deferment of enrolment, the University’s policy normally only allows applicants who have completed the current year NSW HSC or an equivalent current year secondary qualification to have their application approved.
Your application for deferment may be approved, even if you are not a current school-leaver, if you can demonstrate that you have suffered an extreme and unpredictable change of circumstance since you applied for admission with UAC. You would need to be able to provide documentary evidence of your circumstances for such an application to be approved.
For some courses, such as the Bachelor of Laws (graduate entry), deferments are not granted to non school-leavers under any circumstances.
Deferred applicants must reapply in August/September through UAC to take up their offers in the following year.
The period of deferment for March Semester applicants is normally one academic year, but if places are available in July Semester students may be able to resume their courses early. Please note that few courses have vacancies in July Semester, and students who start their degree course then will have a restricted choice of units of study. For this reason it may not be possible for you to finish your degree in the normal minimum amount of time if you start in July.
There is more detailed information about the University’s deferment policy in the UAC Guide. You may contact the Admissions Office if you have any questions about deferment of enrolment.
