Awards
A key enabler in performance-based funding of learning and teaching are awards for excellence in teaching. The University of Sydney established the first of its suite of Teaching and Learning Awards in 1988 - the Teaching Excellence Award - in order to recognise excellence in teaching. This scheme has been reviewed twice and exists today as the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching.
The University also provides for discipline specific as well as Faculty based teaching awards. The recipients of both Faculty and Vice-Chancellor Teaching Awards are often nominated by the University for State and National awards. The Australian Learning and Teaching Council offer three categories of awards and the University has been successful in obtaining these awards over the past three years.
