Specific Background Scholarships
For undergraduate students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly Indigenous students and students from rural and regional areas. Applicants in postgraduate degrees in National Priority areas are also eligible to apply. The relevant degrees at the University of Sydney are the Master of Teaching and Master of Nursing degrees only.
There are three types of Commonwealth Scholarships:
1. Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS), which help with general education costs ($2,207* in 2009), and
2. Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) to help students from rural and remote areas with accommodation costs ($4,415* in 2009).
3. Commonwealth Indigenous Access Scholarships (IAS) to help Indigenous students with educational costs ($4,166* in 2009)

The Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) at the University of Sydney has established a major new Centre for mine automation. Rio Tinto, a global mining company, has committed $21m of funding for an initial period of five years for this new Centre. The aim of the Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation (RTCMA) is to develop and implement the vision of a fully autonomous, remotely operated mine. This is a major research and development effort with a clear focus on delivering sustained leadership in mining automation. The Centre is structured around three main programmes:
- Technology: The objective of the technology programme is to apply and develop existing and new technology to the automation of current mining operations. The programme aims to rapidly field automation systems in areas such as drilling, loading and haulage, and to integrating these into a coherent mining automation system.
- Research: The objective of the research programme is to develop and field key enabling technologies for automated and remote mining. These include sensing, data fusion, machine learning, machine control and mine systems engineering. The programme aims to build a substantive and unique research strength in mining automation technologies and systems.
- Training: The objective of the training programme is to deliver new skills and trained graduates in mining automation. The programme aims to enable Rio Tinto to support and make best use of automation systems across its global operations.
RTCMA is offering up to 5 scholarships (valued at $2,000 each) for students participating in specific 4th year thesis topics in mining automation which contribute to this project. Successful applicants will be exposed to one of the largest field robotics programmes in the country.

The Chevening Scholarships programme is funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and administered by the British Council. The programme offers outstanding graduates and young professionals the opportunity to study at UK universities.
The awards are made for one year's formal study for a postgraduate qualification or for a shorter period of not less than three months to pursue private study or research at a university or similar institution in Britain.
The scholarship includes a return economy airfare to the UK from any Australian city; all compulsory academic fees; monthly stipend; book allowance; and thesis allowance.
Candidates should have a strong undergraduate degree (emphasis is placed on applications with First or Second Class Honours) and be citizens or permanent residents of Australia.
Chevening scholarships are targeted towards a broad range of fields and disciplines. Priority is given to the following areas:
- Science and innovation
- New and renewable energy resources and energy security
- Global environmental issues
- Science policy
- Sustainable development
- Human rights
- Political science

Miss Marion Macaulay was a graduate of the University of Sydney in both Arts and Education & Social Work who spent many years in the teaching profession and was closely associated with women's and educational professional associations. She bequeathed her estate to the University of Sydney to be applied in the area of Humanities.
The Marion Macaulay Bequest Scholarships are offered for undergraduate or postgraduate coursework students currently enrolled in the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Education & Social Work who will be travelling overseas the following year for the purpose of:
- approved exchange to be credited towards their degree
- approved professional experience (e.g. internship or practicum) to be credited towards their degree.

Value: $5,000 if the student holds a primary scholarship for the same scholarship period and $7,500 otherwise

The scholarship was established by donations received to mark the occasion when James Wolfensohn, one of the University's most distinguished alumni, was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Economics in September 1997. This scholarship aims to promote international understanding and advance the academic development of students by enabling them to spend part of their degree in an approved overseas institution where they will undertake studies.
The scholarship is open to full-time students who are citizens of Australia and who are enrolled in their later years of an undergraduate degree (excluding honours year). The proposed studies to be undertaken at the overseas institution must be approved by the Faculty concerned and count towards the student's degree. Preference will be given to applicants who wish to undertake their studies in an institution in Asia.

Both scholarships were established in 2008 by donations received from Mr Larry Kwok and the Kwok Family Trust. These scholarships aim to promote relations and understanding between Australia and China, to strengthen the University of Sydney profile and brand in China, to expand the existing links between the University of Sydney and Peking University and to develop and promote a model of support that will serve as a positive example to other alumni in Hong Kong, China and South East Asia in general.
The scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents willing and able to undertake full-time study for a semester at Peking University. The scholarships shall be open to students of any discipline/subject which is provided by both participating institutions, but priority will be given to students of either or both of the faculties of Law and of Economics and Business for the first three years of the scheme.

The 2008 Governor General’s Undergraduate Essay Competition gives university-level students from all faculties the chance to be further rewarded for their academic skill and talent, while also improving their future academic reference.
Every year, the competition is judged by a panel of highly recognized individuals from High Court justices to academics. The final judging panel for this year will include the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG of the High Court of Australia.
The 2008 questions offer a wide variety of topics current in constitutional and political debate. All relate to the best way forward for the Australian democracy. Each essay contributed will be judged on its individual merit.

The Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) has been appointed by the Australian Government to administer the Allied Health Clinical Placement Scholarship Scheme (AHCPSS). The scholarship will assist eligible scholars to undertake a clinical placement in a rural or remote Australian community.
AHCPSS is valued up to $12,000 per scholarship and will contribute to funding for up to six weeks while the scholar is on their clinical placement. Successful scholars will receive funding towards:
- travel to and from the placement location
- accommodation costs
- living expenses

Honours Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal attributes such as leadership and creativity.
To receive one of these scholarships, students must be local students (ie. Australian or New Zealand citizens, or permanent residents of Australia) and be commencing a University of Sydney Honours programme in 2009. In order to be eligible, the programme you are studying must have an additional year following the normal three-year Bachelor degree. Please check with the relevant Faculty if you are unsure whether your course of study is considered to have an additional Honours year. Some Honours degrees do not include an additional year of study and are therefore not eligible for this scholarship.

Graduate Entry Program Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal attributes such as leadership and creativity for students enrolling in their first year of Graduate Law, Bachelor of Dentistry, University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP) or Teaching Degree.
To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be local students (ie. Australian or New Zealand citizens, or permanent residents of Australia). Scholarships are awarded for study in a specified degree program/Faculty and cannot be transferred.

The Trustees of the Education Trust of the Australian Federation of University Women -NSW Inc. invite applications for the AFUW-NSW TEMPE MANN TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP 2009.
