There are seven residential colleges on the Camperdown/Darlington campuses. The colleges are self-administered, independent institutions affiliated with the University. They offer mostly full board accommodation in furnished, single study/bedrooms with shared facilities. Some also offer self-contained, self-catering accommodation, suitable for postgraduate students, academics, couples or families. Most accommodate both men and women.

The Sydney University Village accommodates 650 students in a village style environment which includes retail facilites, a food court, a bar and meeting rooms. It offers a range of furnished, self-catered accommodation, from single studios to 5 bedroom apartments. It is located in the grounds of the University and provides casual accommodation to visitors in the summer vacation.

Colleges and Halls of Residence

Each residential college has its own distinctive style and facilities. All offer tutorial support and a wide range of social and sporting activities in a supportive communal environment. Students are largely free to come and go as they please; however every college has basic rules and codes of behaviour which residents abide by and respect.

Five colleges are affiliated with religious denominations and while this gives each of these colleges a special character, students of any denomination or religion are eligible for admission.

Unlike some residential colleges in British or American universities, the colleges are not affiliated with any specific discipline of study.

On campus colleges offering full board are:

Halls of residence offering self-catered as well and catered accommodation are:

The Mallett Street campus, Law School, Sydney College of the Arts and Conservatorium of music do not have their own on campus accommodation.

Each of these campuses are within half an hour ride on public transport from the main campus in Camperdonw and Darlington.

Making an application

For accommodation in Darlington House, the University Terraces or Selle House contact the "University-Owned Student Housing Office", where you can complete an on-line application.

An on-line application can also be completed for Sydney University Village.

You can now apply to most University colleges and halls of residence using a Joint Application Form, which allows you to apply to up to five colleges in order of preference for only one application fee. Use the form to apply for:

International House
Mandelbaum House
St John's College
Sancta Sophia College
Wesley College
Women's College

You can either download the Joint Application Form here or visit the web site of the college you would like to apply to. Please note, the downloadable Joint Application Form may vary slightly from college to college, but each version is acceptable to the other participating colleges.

You should only send your application to the college which of your first preference.

St Andrew's College and St Paul's College require seperate application forms, which can be downloaded from their websites.

Some colleges/residences have closing dates, and it is advisable to apply as early as possible (before you have received an Offer of Admission from the University of Sydney).

Usually, offers of college places can not be deferred.

Interviews

Some colleges/halls of residence have interviews as part of the application process. These are generally held in October/November of the preceding year. If you are applying from overseas please indicate this clearly on the application form, together with your anticipated arrival date in Australia.

International Students

If you are enrolling for the first time, the International Student Support Unit (ISSU) provides information and a step-by-step guide for you to prepare for your arrival to Sydney and to help you with booking temporary accommodation on campus. Note that the ISSU does not make applications to colleges/residences on your behalf - you need to make individual applications as required.

The ISSU also provides assistance in finding permanent accommodation for newly-arrived international students. The International Student Housing Officer is available from January to March and during mid-semester break in June and July.

It is important to arrive in Australia at least two or three weeks before your first semester of study, to allow enough time to find a permanent place to live and to attend the orientation sessions during O-week.

Please note that you have to be in Sydney to find off-campus permanent accommodation as you will need to visit the property in person and, if you are planing on renting a room in a share house or a unit/flat, meet with all your potential housemates.

If you have any other queries about accommodation, the ISSU can be contacted at:
