Research Seminar Series - Remembering Martin Luther King: Radical, Revolutionary or Reformer
Join us for our first Research Seminar Series of 2009.
PhD Candidate Daniel Fleming will be speaking at our February Research Seminar on his PhD topic Remembering Martin Luther King: Radical, Revolutionary or Reformer.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is perhaps one of the most vital figures of the modern era. An African American Baptist minster and activist, King was a prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. King worked towards ending racial segregation and racial discrimination through non-violent means such as civil disobedience. Without a doubt everyone has heard of his “I Have a Dream” speech which established him as one of the greatest US orators of our time.

Research Seminar Series – Judith Anderson in the 1940s: From Mrs Danvers to the Noir Western

Professor Desley Deacon, from the Australian National University’s Research School of Social Sciences, will join the United States Studies Centre as guest presenter at our March 2009 Research Seminar Series.
Professor Deacon will be presenting her research on Australian-born actor Judith Anderson. Anderson was renowned for her 'thrilling' voice and portrayal of 'deep' emotion and illicit sexuality and power.
Deacon’s current research looks at Anderson's transnational life in Australia, the United States and Great Britain to explore important but neglected themes in the history of gender and modernity.
Professor Deacon's areas of research include gender, feminism, and modernity; as well as American and Australian societies and cultures in comparative perspective.
